Morning 03:18
MORNING To find the Western path Right thro the Gates of Wrath I urge my way Sweet Mercy leads me on With soft repentant moan I see the break of day The war of swords & spears Melted by dewy tears Exhales on high The Sun is freed from fears And with soft grateful tears Ascends the sky (William Blake, 1757-1827) Mattino Per trovare il Sentiero d’Occidente Attraverso i cancelli dell’Ira Affretto il mio passo Dolce Misericordia mi guida Con un soffice gemito di pentimento Io vedo la nascita di un nuovo giorno La guerra che è fatta di lance e spade Mutata da lacrime che paion rugiada Lascia il petto col respiro E il Sole, liberato dalle sue paure, Fra soffici lacrime di gratitudine Ascende al cielo (William Blake, 1757 – 1827)

When the scented night of summer covers Field and city with her veil of blue All the lanes are full of straying lovers Murmuring the words I say to you. Just a little love, a little kiss Just an hour that holds a world of bliss Eyes that tremble like the stars above me And the little word that says you love me Night will pass and day will follow after Other griefs and joys will come with day Yet through all the weeping and the laughter You will ever hear the words I say Just a little love, a little kiss I would give you all my life for this As I hold you fast and bend above you And I hear you whispering ‘I love you.’ You and I may change like April weather Other loves may call us, not in vain But tonight at least is ours together And the hour that will not come again (Lao Silesu, Adrian Ross, 1913) Un po’ d’amore, un bacio innocente Quando la notte dal profumo d’estate ricopre I campi e le città con il suo velo blu Le strade sono piene di innamorati che passeggiano E che mormorano le parole che io stesso dico a te Solo un po’ d’amore, un bacio innocente Solo un’ora che racchiude un mondo di incanti Occhi che tremano come le stelle nel cielo E quella parola, così breve, a rivelarmi che tu mi ami La notte passerà e i giorni si inseguiranno fra loro Altri dolori e altre gioie arriveranno col tempo Ma attraverso il pianto e le risate Per sempre sentirai le parole che io ti dico Solo un po’ d’amore e un bacio innocente Ti darei tutta la mia vita per questo Mentre ti stringo forte e mi chino su di te E ti sento sussurrare “Ti amo” Tu ed io potremmo cambiare come il tempo in aprile Altri amori potrebbero chiamarci e non invano Ma questa notte, almeno stanotte ci appartiene E stiamo assieme in quest’ora che non tornerà Mai più (Lao Silesu, Adrian Ross, 1913)

Bitter Song 02:06
No bough Can be a home forever Not even to the oak tree leaf We thought we’d build a nest And be forever safe from snow But wind keeps on blowing all through the leaves And wind shakes the boughs and takes its toll Love, so tender and elusive Among the petals Find the thorns You’d weave them into a crown And still be as poor As before ‘Cause wind gives a voice to singing leaves But wind dries the mouth And kills the song (Andrillo) Canzone amara Nessun ramo Può essere una casa per sempre Neppure per la foglia di quercia Pensavamo che avremmo costruito un nido E saremmo stati per sempre al riparo dalla neve Ma il vento continua a soffiare fra le foglie E scuote i rami Per avere il suo tributo Amore, così tenero e sfuggente Fra i petali trovi le spine Ne potresti intrecciare una corona Ed essere ancora povero come prima Perché il vento da una voce alle foglie che cantano Ma il vento asciuga la bocca E uccide il canto (Andrillo)

The man I dreamed I’d be Well, it’s not me, it’s not entirely me It’s a wounded man you see But there’s no… no one else I’d be ‘Cause, baby, in spite of everything I didn’t lie to drag your sweet eyes on me Yes babe, in spite of everything Babe I was there When you reached out to me When a thing ain’t real babe You never get to touch it, no If it’s fake it’s fake babe Reach out your hands and touch me You know that babe In spite of everything I didn’t leave you alone When you reached out to me (Andrillo) Malgrado tutto L’uomo che sognavo di essere Non sono io, non interamente C’è un uomo ferito qui davanti a te Ma non c’è nessuno, nessun altro che vorrei essere Perché lo vedi, malgrado tutto Non ho mentito per riuscire a farmi notare da te E poi, malgrado tutto Io c’ero quando hai avuto bisogno di me Quando una cosa è falsa Non riesci mai a toccarla Se è falsa è falsa, amore, Sporgiti con le mani, toccami Lo sai, lo sai amore Malgrado tutto Io non ti ho lasciata sola Quando avevi bisogno di me (Andrillo)

about

This is a collection of love songs, some of which I wrote by myself, some of which I borrowed. I am fascinated by the way a song can be rewritten while still being faithful to itself. That’s why I can hardly find the words to express my gratitude to Giovanni Coda for his great movie, “Mark’s Diary”, without which neither would this soundtrack album exist, nor would I have had the opportunity to investigate, through songs and in sync with the movie, various shades of loving.
Far from being an “album of covers”, this record is mainly a “sonic transposition”, so to speak, of what happens on the silver screen as the movie unrolls and its characters communicate using words that are sometimes borrowed from the lyrics of the songs in this album.
I (respectfully) changed practically everything in the songs, to both adjust them to the movie and to reveal more about them than I thought had previously met the eye (or, better, the ear).
Here and there, I even added or changed a word or two – like in Fabrizio De Andrè’s immortal “Amore che vieni, amore che vai” – a song about the elusiveness of love - to which I added a verse by American Beat Poet Alleng Ginsberg that fits perfectly into it, stating that “The weight we carry / is love” .
And, as my memory returned transfigured versions of classics, I poured a bit (or a lot) of my soul in Blondie’s “Call me”, in Depeche Mode’s “Enjoy the Silence”and in “A Little Love, a Little Kiss”, a worldwide hit by Sardinian composer Lao Silesu & British lyricist Adrian Ross, dating back to 1913.
Then I messed with The Doors’ “Light my Fire”, with a couple of masterpieces by The Smiths and with a precious song by Italian Punk Band CCCP.
Moreover, I wrote a couple of songs in English myself, (“Bitter Song” and “In Spite of Everything”), and set to music a poem by English poet and prophet William Blake (“Morning”), as I felt the need for a ceremony of sound and words I could open the record with.
There’s so much to these songs. They are not simply timeless “love songs” wearing a new dress. They make a delicate and poignant soundtrack to an important movie dealing with the relationship between love, sexuality and disability.
Other important contributions to the soundtrack, not included in this record, came from Arnaldo Pontis and Cosimo Morleo, fine musicians I have already had the pleasure and the honour to work with.
So, for what this movie is capable of revealing about the joy and the pain of love for so many people mainly forced to look at life through a window, I am grateful to Giovanni Coda and to all the great artists and performers who helped turn this movie into a masterpiece.
Such a lot of hard work and passion and all of a sudden, lo, it’s happened!
Hugs,
Andrillo
